Original description: Elongate. approximately ellipsoidal shell, somewhat tapering toward the cephalis and usually rounded but rarely flattened distally. Cephalis small. spherical. poreless or sparsely porous, sometimes partly enclosed by the thoracic wall, in some specimens with a small apical spine. From the base of the cephalis, primary lateral and dorsal spines extend in the proximal part of the thoracic wall of some specimens. Thorax closed distally, usually rounded, sometimes tapered but less acutely than toward the cephalis, and in some specimens with one or more small, irregular terminal spines. No third segment distinguished. Proximally, the thoracic wall is of loose spongy meshwork in most specimens, but in some it is lamellar, though with characteristically irregular and divided pores; distally (occasionally set off by a change in contour) the thoracic wall has smaller, more regular pores.

(Based on 30 specimens) Total length 125-220µm. Maximum breadth 80-125µm. Distinguishing characters (rw): This species is distinguished from L. renzae by having no third segment, and by the thorax usually being longer and more spongy. It is distinguished from L. thornburgi by the generally more rounded termination of the shell. and by the proximal part of the spongy thoracic wall not being sufficiently thick to enclose the cephalis.
Remarks on original description: Rare specimens of an enigmatic form (plate 2, figure 3) with very irregular, commonly subdivided thoracic pores, occur in the samples tabulated from core JYN V 20P, which is stratigraphically well below the lower limit of typical Lithopera baueri. Although this form superficially resembles L. baueri and L. renzae to some extent, insufficient specimens have been found to establish its relationships.
