Translation: Stöhr gives no definition for the genus, but only for the new family of Ommatodiscida, probably because he says that there is only one genus in this family. This definition is given here for the genus.)]

On both sides of a circular, elliptical, or ovoid, median plate, constructed by concentrically distributed septa that are fragmented by radial beams, are erected regularly symmetrical and more or less important, structures of cellular spongious material, so that the global form is globular, ellipsoidal, or lenticular. Above all, there are two porous deck plates, mostly with small spines, related to the inferior unequal mass of spongious material. The radial beams of the median plate form at the periphery small protuberances surrounding an aperture. A small lattice sphere is not rarely found at the centre of the median plate. (In German. Translated by J.P.C.)]

Etymology: From the Greek ommatodiscus = disk with eyes

Extra details from original publication
[By all their characteristics, these remarkable new forms are related to the Ommatidae, but on another side they are close to the Cyrtidae by their aperture.]

[Ommatodiscus Stöhr, 1878, p.517 is a Nomen Nudum
Stratigraphic Range: Miocene. Cenozoic]
