Citation: Oroplegma Haeckel 1887
Rank: genus
Type species: Oroplegma diplosphaera Haeckel 1887 [designated by Campbell,1954, p.D48]
Described on page(s) : 1599
Family (traditional): not-known

Current identification:

Original Description
Orosphaerida with a spongy, spherical or slightly polyhedral lattice-shell, which is enveloped by a loose spongy framework and bears numerous radial spines;

Etymology: From the Greek oroplegma = hilly shell of framework

Extra details from original publication
The genus Oroplegma differs from the other Orosphaerida in the development of an external lattice-work enveloping the internal primary shell, and produced by the union of the branches of the radial spines. This outer shell is either a simple lattice-plate (comparable to the cortical shell of Diplosphaera), or a spongy framework (as in Rhizoplegma).
[Although Campbell [1954, p.D48] designates Oroplegma diploplegmium as the type species of Oroplegma Haeckel, 1887a, there is no species known by that name. We assume he intended to designate Oroplegma diplosphaera Haeckel,1887a, p.1600, pl.107 fig.1, x50.
Description: Haeckel here includes the Orosphaerida amoung the Phaeodaria; however, according to Haecker, 1906, p.888 and later authors, the Orosphaerida are included in the Spumellaria.]
