Original Description

Shell generally large, spherical, with internal wicker-work frame and without a lattice-plate; radius of hollow sphere approximately 0.4 thickness of spongy wall; in center of shell spongy frame condenses more or less to form a loose mass with large polygonal alveoles (diameter about 0.5 shell radius); from central mass radiate numerous repeatedly branched radial beams so that shell-cavity is cut up into large, irregular polygonal spaces; surface of shell somewhat roughened; pores chiefly circular to sub-quadrangular, sometimes rounded subtriangular, of several sizes scattered freely.

Diameter (usually), 170-240µm.

Distinguishing characters: Plegmosphaera churchi differs from other species of subgenus in wall thickness. Somewhat like Spongolonche kewi, n. sp., from which it differs mainly in lack of polar spines. Doubtlessly species referred to by Woodring, Bramlette, and Kleinpell (1936, p.147) as being “apparent in almost any hand specimen from the Malaga," for it is not only very large but also extremely abundant in this section.
