Original Description
Shell large, with elliptical ring on each end of which is a fairly large conical spine with 2 shorter spines on either side farther down on ring; cortical shell smooth, spherical (its diameter 0.31 total length), immediately attached to ring without polar spines but by means of lateral bars firmly soldered to its surface; (bars are immediate bifurcations of polar spines and continue as parts of ring); medullary shell spherical, (diameter 0.4 that of cortical shell) connected to latter by a few (not more than 6) thin, rodlike radial beams; elliptical ring prismatic (triangular in section with base faced inward), at each end of ring 3 conical spines, a longer central one and a shorter lateral one on each side, the long axis of ring morphologically the transverse axis (the latter 0.33 former) of shell as in other species; cortical shell wall thin; cortical shell pores circular and nearly equal size, few odd ones near junction with ring fused in elliptical pairs, about 24 pores around a diameter of shell itself; pores of medullary shell polygonal, large, similar in size and form; medullary shell framework of delicate prismatic bars.

Size: Diameter, of cortical lattice sphere, 87µm, of medullary sphere, 32.2µm, of pores of cortical shell, 8.8µm, of pores of medullary shell, 12.2µm; length, of whole shell, 300µm, of main terminal spine, 50µm, of side spines, 20µm.

Etymology: No information given

Extra details from original publication
Distinguishing features: Saturnalis lateralis n. sp., differs from earlier described species in the thorny elliptical ring, lack of vertical polar spines and in orientation of ring (longer axis broadly elliptical, shorter axis not much greater than sphere). Our species is not lik
