Catalog entries: Spongatractus
Original description: Spongurida with spongy ellipsoidal cortical shell, enclosing a simple, spherical or ellipsoidal, latticed medullary shell. On the poles of the axis occur opposite strong spines.
The genus Spongatractus differs from Spongodruppa by development of two strong spines in the axis of the shell, on its two opposite poles; therefore it bears the same relation to the latter that Lithatractus does to Druppula, and can be derived from Lithatractus by a spongy thickening of the cortical shell.
Remarks on original description: [Campbell [1954, p.D74] considers Spongatractus Haeckel, 1887a to be an objective synonym of Spongosphaera Ehrenberg, 1847b. He designates Spongosphaera pachystyla Ehrenberg, 1873a as the type species of Spongosphaera and only by inference of Spongatractus. However, the type species of Spongosphaera [by subsequent monotypy] is Spongosphaera polyacantha Muller, 1857. Therefore, we consider the type species designation of Spongosphaera pachystyla Ehrenberg, 1873a, p.256; Ehrenberg, 1875, pl.26, fig.3, x300 for Spongatractus to date from Chediya, 1959, p.115].
