Original Description
Shell ellipsoidal, twice as long as broad, with thorny surface. Spongy framework everywhere of equal structure, with large meshes, ten to twenty times as broad as the bars.
Size: Length of the shell 0.3, breadth 0.15.

Haeckel listed Spongurus stypticus under the subgeneric name Spongurantha, but did not include the subgeneric name in the species name.[comment from RadWorld database]
