Original Description Cortical shell perfectly globular, with three equidistant, nearly equal, thick, bladelike spines which are heavy, 10 or more times in length than their basal diameter, sharply pointed, widened about a third of the length below the blunted tip, three-angled, with the three faces concave, and the sides parallel for the remaining three-fourths of the length; cortical shell with subuniform pores, more or less circular, sometimes shaped like a tear droplet, seven to nine in number across a radius, the surface divided into hexagonal areas, the pores sunken below their outer faces, the surface also with needle-like spines, about 18 visible in a quadrant at one focus; medullar shell small, with four to six pores across a radius; pores wide, bars very thin, this sphere connected with the cortical shell by means of radial beams, these beams thin, six or more at one focus. Size: Length of arms, 160-210µm; diameter of cortical shell, 120-160µm; diameter of pores of cortical shell, 11.0-13.2µm; diameter of arm, 24.2-28.6µm; diameter of medullary shell, 44.0-48.4µm; length of cortical spines, 17.6µm. Extra details from original publication Distinguishing characters:Stylosphaera trixyphophora n. sp. differs from all of the described species of the subgenus in being decidedly spiny and in having three arms. It has more pores in a radius than S. setosa Ehrenberg (1872), as well as having longer and thicker arms. Its arms are also longer than those of S. euterpe Haeckel (1887), and those of S. melpomene Haeckel (1887). The shell is larger than that of S. hispida Ehrenberg (1859), and it has hexagonal areas which are lacking in S. liostylus Ehrenberg (1875). It must be carefully distinguished from S. megaxyphos trixyphos n. subsp., which also has three arms, but which subspecies lacks any spines on the cortical shell. A species of somewhat similar appearance, Trilonche pittmani Hinde (1809), from the Devonian of New South Wales, lacks the surface spines (in sectional view). Editors' Notes [The authors here list this species under the subgeneric name Stylosphaerella and include the subgeneric name in the species name.
