Calciosolenia

Classification: ntax_mesozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Calciosoleniaceae -> Calciosolenia
Sister taxa: Calciosolenia

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Calciosoleniaceae):
This taxon: Rhombic; rim bicylic; central area spanned by numerous transverse bars

Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)
Calciosolenia fossilis
Minute to small, long and narrow rhombic muroliths with a central area spanned by numerous transverse bars.
Calciosolenia huberi
A medium-sized species of Calciosolenia possessing a distally-orientated spur-like extension to the rim, located at one end of the coccolith.
Calciosolenia sp.
Specimens not identified to species level

Taxonomy:

Citation: Calciosolenia Gran, 1912
taxonomic rank: Genus
Type species: Calciosolenia murrayi Gran, 1912.
Synonyms: Dityolithus Górka 1957
Taxonomic discussion: Deflandre in Deflandre & Fert, 1954 proposed the generic name Scapholithus for fossil ‘scapholith’ coccoliths but these are indistinguishable from the extant representatives classified within Calciosolenia Gran, 1912.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Calciosolenia *

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Calciosoleniaceae):
This taxon: Rhombic; rim bicylic; central area spanned by numerous transverse bars

Morphology:

Typically small, fragile and dissolution susceptible, and so only consistently seen when preservation is good.

Phylogenetic relations

Calciosolenia is formally in the Order Syracosphaerales and is included here with the Stephanolithiaceae to avoid having a monogeneric ordinal group - and because it shows obvious affinities with the Stephanolithiacaea.
