Taxonomy

Citation: Globigerinella radians (Egger 1893)
taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Globigerina radians
Taxonomic discussion: Traditionally regarded as a variant within G. siphonifera, but shown by Weiner et al. (2015) to be a discrete species based on molecular genetic data and subtle but consistent morphological differences.

Catalog entries: Globigerina radians

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Globigerinella): Test initially trochospiral, becoming nearly planispiral; globular to ovate chambers; aperture umbilical; fine spines cover the test
This taxon: Near planispiral coiling & slightly radially elongate chambers

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Geographic distribution

In modern oceans a common, warm water, species [SCOR WG138]

Most likely ancestor: Globigerinella siphonifera - at confidence level 3 (out of 5). Data source: Weiner et al. 2015, f11.

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source: present in the plankton (SCOR WG138)
First occurrence (base): within Tortonian Stage (7.25-11.62Ma, base in Tortonian stage). Data source: Weiner et al. 2015, prediction form molecular clock (so very large error margin)
