Octocyclus reinhardtii

Classification: ntax_main -> Mesozoic nannofossils -> Podorhabdales -> Axopodorhabdaceae -> Octocyclus -> Octocyclus reinhardtii
Sister taxa: O. magnus, O. reinhardtii, O. sp.

Taxonomy:
Citation: Octocyclus reinhardtii (Bukry, 1969) Wind & Wise in Wise & Wind, 1977
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Podorhabdus reinhardtii Bukry, 1969

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Octocyclus): Elliptical; central area spanned by eight bars delineating eight large perforations arranged either side of the long axis.
This taxon: Large (8-12 µm)

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages:
P. reinhardtii *

Morphology:
Santonian holotype is a broken specimen and unclear. According to Wise & Wind (1977) this is a senior synonym of  O. magnus Black 1972, but the latter name is arguably useful for distinguishing particularly large, mid Cretaceous forms. Also in the Albian forms the crossbars are all of similar width whereas in the later forms, as in P. dietzmannii, the bar aligned with the short axis is significantly wider.

Geological Range:
Notes: At intermediate palaeolatitudes O. reinhardtii has its LO in the Turonian, zone UC9a, but it extends to the Maastrichtain at high paleolatitudes (Burnett 1998)
Last occurrence (top): within Late Maastrichtian Substage (66.04-70.10Ma, top in Maastrichtian stage). Data source: Burnett 1998
First occurrence (base): within Albian Stage (100.50-113.20Ma, base in Albian stage). Data source: Burnett 1998
