Medium sized, elliptical placoliths with conspicuous tube cycle and closed centre. Two ‘grooves’ may be conspicuous along the longitudinal axis.

Synonyms: Praeprinsius Varol & Jakubowski 1989 - we do not regard it as useful to subdivide the short-lived genus Prinsius into Prinsius and Praeprinsius
Taxonomic discussion: A number of different early, small species have been described (P. africanus, P. tenuiculus, P. rosenkrantzii), but usage can be inconsistent. Some authors group these smaller, early representatives within the separate genus Praeprinsius (Varol & Jakubowski, 1989).

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Prinsiaceae): Placoliths with R-units forming the lower layer of proximal shield, inner tube and middle tube; V-units forming an upper layer to the proximal shield, outermost tube and the distal shield. In LM they display a dark outer cycle and brighter inner cycle. Central-area structures are conjunct, formed from the R-units.
This taxon: Small to medium size (3-6 µm), elliptical, central areas narrow, closed or with slit-like opening
