Taxonomic discussion: U. sibogae and U. foliosa were regarded as varieties for a long period but have since been shown to be very well separated species, see e.g. Geisen et al. (2004).

Coccospheres large (20-30 µm) usually containing 2-4 cells. Liths circular, 3-7 µm; central opening broad; proximal shield monocyclic, flat, wider than distal shield.
