Reticulofenestra nicolasii

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Isochrysidales -> Noelaerhabdaceae -> Reticulofenestra -> R. lockeri group -> Reticulofenestra nicolasii
Sister taxa: R. chriskingii, R. daviesii, R. gartneri, R. lockeri, R. onusta, R. macmillanii, R. martinii ⟩⟨ R. nicolasii

Taxonomy:

Citation: Reticulofenestra nicolasii (Perez Panera, in Perez Panera & Ronchi 2021) Young 2023
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Hornibrookina nicolasii Perez Panera, in Perez Panera & Ronchi 2021
Taxonomic discussion: This distinctive form was described as a species of Hornibrookina, based on similarity of form in the SEM. However, both the text and the images indicate that the distal shield is formed of R-units: "When observed under crossed polarisers and with a gypsum plate, the tube and distal shield elements show the same crystallographic orientation (Pl. 4, figs 10, 14). This is not the case in other species of Hornibrookina, where the tube elements correspond to R-units and the shield elements to V-units, producing an alternation of colours between the tube and the distal shield." The prominent grill resembles that of Hornibrookina but also that of other members of the R. lockeri group and unlike the grill of Hornibrookina it is conjunct with the rim elements. So, Young (2023) recombined this species in Reticulofenestra

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (R. lockeri group): Elliptical reticulofenestrids with relatively open central area spanned on the proximal surface by a robust grill (clearly visible in lm as a birefringent plate with variable number of perforations).
This taxon: Medium sized (5-6 µm) elliptical Reticulofenestra with slitting in distal shield and grill formed of robust bars.
