Algirosphaera cucullata

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Rhabdosphaeraceae -> Algirosphaera -> Algirosphaera cucullata
Sister taxa: A. cucullata, A. fabaceus, A. meteora, A. robusta, A. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Algirosphaera cucullata (Lecal-Schlauder 1951) Young et al., 2003
taxonomic rank: Species
Basionym: Acanthoica cucullata Lecal-Schlauder 1951
Synonyms: Cyrtosphaera cucullata (Lecal-Schlauder 1951) Kleijne 1992

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Algirosphaera): Body coccoliths with well-developed radial lath cycle; domal or double-lipped protrusion; coccosphere dimorphic, CFCs larger and taller
This taxon: Coccoliths rounded, protrusion formed of needle-like elements without tile cover

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: A. cucullata *

Morphology:

Coccosphere weakly varimorphic (protrusions rather higher toward apical pole).
Coccoliths with domal protrusion, “bowler hat” shaped. Like Algirosphaera robusta but lacks discrete polar coccoliths; liths are less elongate; and protrusion is covered by elongate needle-like elements, rather than tile-like elements.

Search data:
LITHS: planolith, elliptical, CA: ca_disjunct, grill, process,
CSPH: equant, monomorphic,
Lith size: 2->4µm; Coccosphere size: 8->11µm; Liths per sphere: 35->70
Data source notes: lith size from Kleijne 1992 (BC width) & slightly extended; csph data from Cros & Fortuño 2003; lith numbers from Yang & Wei 2003, range inferred from single estimate

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source: present in the plankton (Young et al. 2003)
First occurrence (base): within No known fossil record modern (0.00-0.00Ma, base in "Holocene" stage). Data source: [JRY rough estimate]
