Original description: Sedentary cells forming palmelloid colonies, kneecap-shaped, 6-9 µm diam., often flattened if touching each other. Chloroplast single, parietal, yellow-green, without stigma, with two large lobes and a protruding pyrenoid. Nucleus excentrically positioned. Golgi body single. Deposits of lipid, paramylon and polyphosphate. Motile cells elongate, 6-9 x 3-4 µm. Two unequal flagella, 13 µm and 5 µm, and a short slender haptonema inserted at some distance from the anterior end of the cell body. System of flagellar roots with several roots near the nucleus and eight parallel microtubules running away from the nucleus. Pit with lateral inflations entering the interior of the cell near the flagellar insertion.

Morphology:

The dominant stage consists of non-motile colonies of slightly compressed cells embedded in mucilage. Parietal chloroplasts are golden-brown in colour. Appendages of motile cells are inserted ventrally. The anterior flagellum possesses hairs and is covered by round knob scales (a feature that has not previously been reported for this taxon) and the short posterior flagellum is distally reduced. Incomplete flagella with knob scales were observed in non-motile cells. Non-motile cells possess peripheral mucilage vesicles and are surrounded by a homogeneous mucilage layer. Cells may have two plastids with parallel thylakoid lamellae separated by a large stromatal space. Flagella are inserted in an invagination near the nucleus in motile cells. This species has no pyrenoid and no eyespot. [Bendif et al. 2011]
