Calciosolenia corsellii

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Calciosoleniaceae -> Calciosolenia -> Calciosolenia corsellii
Sister taxa: C. brasiliensis, C. corsellii, C. murrayi ⟩⟨ C. alternans, C. aperta, C. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Calciosolenia corsellii Malinverno, 2004
taxonomic rank: Species
Variants:
Taxonomic discussion: This species has probably often been included in C. brasiliensis

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Calciosolenia): Coccosphere with rhombic muroliths with central area floored by transverse laths (scapholiths); varimorphic or dimorphic.
This taxon: Coccosphere without spines; coccoliths 3-4µm long, with spurs at the ends

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: C. corsellii * , Calciosolenia subtropicus

Morphology:

Coccosphere similar to C. brasiliensis but coccoliths more like those of C. murrayi in size (3-4µm long), number of laths, and in presence of spurs at the ends of the coccoliths. The spurs are often best developed toward the ends of the coccosphere and maybe missing orrudimentary on the coccoliths near the middle of the coccosphere.
For identification note that the liths usually are similar in size to an E. huxleyi coccolith and have separated laths.

Size:
Liths 3-4µm long

Ecology & Biogeography

Described from the Mediterranean but also certainly occurs in the Atlantic (Young unpubl. obs.) and probably globally

In our article smaller forms (fig. 15-16) are also presented with spurs which is a consequence of warm and oligotroph water. Larger specimens without spurs are more characreristic for transition (of climate, current mixing, water exchanges, flooding, more nearshore influences, seasonality...)
