Calciosolenia murrayi

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Calciosoleniaceae -> Calciosolenia -> Calciosolenia murrayi
Sister taxa: C. brasiliensis, C. corsellii, C. murrayi ⟩⟨ C. alternans, C. aperta, C. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Calciosolenia murrayi Gran, 1912
taxonomic rank: Species
Synonyms:
Variants: Malinverno 2004 recognised four types within C. murrayi based primarily on the sepration of the laths in the central area of the body coccoliths She interpreted this variation as most likely being a case of variable degree of calcification, since the types intergraded and coccospheres with more than coccolith type can occur.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Calciosolenia): Coccosphere with rhombic muroliths with central area floored by transverse laths (scapholiths); varimorphic or dimorphic.
This taxon: Dimorphic - terminal coccoliths have one end extended into spine; coccoliths 2.5-4 µm long, often with overlapping laths

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: C. murrayi * , A. mediterranea * , C. sinuosa * , C. compacta *

Morphology:

Coccosphere dimorphic, broad, tapering rather abruptly at ends with only a few elongate liths. Terminal liths have one end extended into spine. Bars not very regular and often merge into continuous sheet. Liths 2.5-4 µm long, spines up to 25 µm, coccospheres up to 30 µm.
For identification note that the liths usually are smaller than an E. huxleyi coccolith and/or have overlapping laths.

Size:
Liths 2.5-4 µm long, spines up to 25 µm, coccospheres up to 30 µm.

Geological Range:
Notes: Frequently recorded in the fossil record, but mainly as a default identification.
Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source: present in the plankton (Young et al. 2003)
First occurrence (base): within Paleocene Epoch (55.96-66.04Ma, base in Danian stage). Data source: [JRY rough estimate]
