Chrysotila roscoffensis

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Coccolithales -> Pleurochrysidaceae -> Chrysotila -> Chrysotila roscoffensis
Sister taxa: C. carterae, C. dentata, C. gayraliae, C. la-hague, C. placolithoides, C. roscoffensis, C. scherffelii, C. stipitata, C. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Chrysotila roscoffensis (Dangeard 1934) Andersen et al. 2015
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Syracosphaera roscoffensis Dangeard 1934
Synonyms:
Taxonomic discussion: This combination was ommitted from Andersen et al. 2014 but was proposed in Andersen et al. 2015. P. pseudoroscoffensis was separated from P. roscoffensis on  the basis of absence of nodes on the distal shield. However, in culture intermediates occur so the separation was questioned by Probert in Young et al. (2003), and the two species were regarded as synonyms by Andersen et al. 2015. The image metadata indicates the original identification of the strains illustrated.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Chrysotila): Coccoliths elliptical narrow-rimmed placoliths with complex rim structure, open central area
This taxon: Two cycles of nodes on tube inner wall and often one cycle of nodes on the distal shield.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: S. roscoffensis * , Cricosphaera roscoffensis haptonemofera, Pleurochrysis pseudoroscoffensis

Morphology:

Intermediates between forms with nodes on the distal shield (typical P. roscoffensis) and without ("P. pseudoroscoffensis") occur (Probert unpubl. obs. in Young et al. 2003). Detailed description given in Gayral & Fresnel 1976.

Biology & life-cycles

The life-cycle was desribed in detail by Gayral & Fesnel (1983) including direct observations on meiosis and syngamy. The haloid phase is non-calcifiyng and maybe either non-motile, forming filamentous benthic colonies, or motile.

Cultures: Strains of this species are maintained in culture, for details see Roscoff Culture Collection.
