Classification: ntax_main -> Discoasterales -> Discoasteraceae -> Discoaster -> D. nodifer group -> Discoaster binodosus
Sister taxa: D. cruciformis, D. colletii, D. gemmifer, D. mediosus, D. binodosus, D. nodifer, D. distinctus, D. septemradiatus, D. tanii, D. tani ornatus, D. istanbulensis, D. martinii, D. williamsii, D. backmanii, D. okadae

Taxonomy:
Citation: Discoaster binodosus Martini 1958
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Discoaster binodosus * Martini 1958
Taxonomic discussion:

Intergrades with D. mediosus (see Remarks for that species).

Synonyms:

As originally described D. binodosus contained two sub-species Discoaster binodosus subsp. binodosus (with rounded/pointed ray tips) and Discoaster binodosus subsp. hirundinus (with notched ray tips). The hirundinus form is now regarded as a synonym of D. nodifer.

Variants:

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (D. nodifer group): Stellate discoasters with straight rays; rays free for >1/3 of their length; rays with bifurcations or nodes; 5-10 rays
This taxon: Usually 8 rays with free ray length that approaches half the diameter of the central area or greater and prominent lateral nodes and pointed ray tips.
