Taxonomy:
Citation: Discoaster brouweri Tan Sin Hok 1927
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Discoaster brouweri * Tan Sin Hok 1927

Synonyms:
Variants:

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (D. brouweri group): 6-rayed discoasters without bifurcations, and closely related forms with 3 to 5 rays.
This taxon: Ray tips non-bifurcate but with marked proximal extensions giving it a distinctive concavo-convex form.

Morphology:
Description: Ray tips non-bifurcate and with marked proximal extensions giving it a distinctive concavo-convex form. The distal surface is usually rather smooth, proximal surface more sculpted with proximal boss often present. Probably evolved from D. exilis and first ocurrence is very gradational.

Search data:
LITHS: nannolith-radiate, star-shaped, CA: process, CROSS-POLARS: 1ou, V-prominent,
Lith size: 10->20µm; Segments: 6->6;
Data source notes: size from illustrated specs

Geological Range:
Notes: Very common NN11-18, the FAD is hard to determine but the LAD is one of the best established biostratigraphic events, see especially Chapman & Chepstow-Lusty 1997.
Last occurrence (top): at top of NN18 zone (100% up, 1.9Ma, in Gelasian stage). Data source: zonal marker (see e.g. Young 1998)
First occurrence (base): within NN9 zone (9.53-10.55Ma, base in Tortonian stage). Data source: Young 1998
