taxonomic rank: Species

Taxonomic discussion: Although combination coccospheres not known for this species Archontikis et al. (2020) transfered it to Syracosphaera, since the forms previously included in Anthosphaera are well-characterised and two of them, including the generotype, have been shown to form combination coccospheres with Syracosphaera HET phases.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Syracosphaera HOL (Anthosphaera type)): fried egg shape, dimorphic (CFCs with large leaf-like process)
This taxon: Coccoliths ornamented; BCs with large perforations separated by radial rows of crystallites; concave distal surface with flange and triangular central boss. CFCs with complex blade ending in spine-like rows of crystallites.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: A. origami *

Morphology:

Coccosphere, usually spherical, composed of c. 40–80 BCs and c. 5–10 CFCs, all ornament- ed. BCs elliptical with a two crystallites-width rim, which supports c. 10 robust radial struts of about three crystallites separated by large perforations. The perforate cycle supports a concave distal cover with a central triangular apical boss that is flattened parallel to the long axis of the coccolith. CFCs elliptical and their rim supports an ornamented arched process ending distally in c. 6 spine-like struts of crystallites and a central tri- angular apical spine. Within the arch, oblique buttress-like sets occur giving an ornamented appearance. [Archontikis et al. 2020]

Size:
Coccosphere ca. 5 µm; body coccolith length 1.0 – 1.4 µm; body coccolith width ca. 0.8 µm; body coccolith height ca. 0.8 µm; circum-flagellar coccolith (long axis) ca. 1µm; circum-flagellar coccolith height ca. 1-2 µm.
