Helicosphaera HOL catilliferus type

Classification: ntax_main -> Holococcoliths -> flat-topped -> Helicosphaera HOL -> Helicosphaera HOL catilliferus type
Sister taxa: H. HOL catilliferus type, H. HOL confusus type, H. HOL ponticuliferus type, H. pavimentum HOL

Taxonomy:
Citation: Helicosphaera HOL catilliferus type
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Syracosphaera catillifera Kamptner 1937
Synonyms:
Taxonomic discussion: Nomenclature here follows Young & Bown (2014)

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Helicosphaera HOL): Monomorphic; liths solid - formed of layers of crystallites in rhomboid array
Coccolith distal surface with central boss and varying number of depressions.

This taxon: Liths with flat-top without perforations; pyramidal boss near centre; rim 5-6 crystallites high; central opening on proximal side small or absent;

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages:
S. catillifera * , S. cornus *

Morphology:
The absence of perforations results in the rhombohedral array structure being particularly clearly visible, in good SEMs

Size:
Liths 2-3 µm long; 5-7 crystallites high

Biology & life-cycles
Combination coccospheres with Helicosphaera carteri observed but also observed in culture as alternate stage of H. wallichii (K. Hagino pers. comm.)
