Sister taxa: Lithostromation, Planolithus, Imperiaster, Martiniaster, Isolithus

Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)
3 free rays
Lithostromation hohnensis
3 co-planar narrow, bifurcate rays, medium size (8-11 µm)
Lithostromation pyramidale
Pyramidal - 3 co-planar bifurcate rays and a fourth perpendicular
Trochoaster tripartitus
3 co-planar broad, bifurcate rays, large size (12-22 µm)
6 free rays
Lithostromation martinii
Hexaradiate with distinct free rays, all 6 rays similar,  ridge runs along length of rays
Lithostromation nodosum
Like L. martinii, but with more complex central structure
Lithostromation obscurum
6 long free rays at two levels, smooth/solid
Lithostromation reginum
6 long free rays at two levels, porous
without free rays
Lithostromation operosum
Medium-sized (5-10 µm), sub-circular
Lithostromation perdurum
Large, triangular nannoliths with porous structure formed from small crystallites.
Lithostromation simplex
Hexagonal, perforate nannolith with low birefringence. Six thin rays extend a short distance beyond the margin of hexagonal disc with numerous pores. Secondary shorter rays are present between each of the longer rays, which terminate at the disc edge.
Lithostromation biconvexitas
Ellipsoidal central body with ends extended as spines
Lithostromation sp.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Lithostromationaceae): Large (10-20µm) triangular to stellate nannoliths with porous structure formed from small crystallites. In xpl behave as single crystal unit with low birefringence
This taxon: Triangular to stellate nannoliths with porous structure formed from small crystallites. All show 3-fold symetry but with a wide range of forms.

Hello Jeremy.

In the article "The fossil record of coastal coccolithophores" - 2019, you posted a photo of Lithostromation stellaris. But I did not find a description of this species. I also met similar specimens in the Eocene, I could not identify them. It looks like Lithostromation simplex or Trochoaster martinii, but they are certainly not. Do you have a description of this species and its stratigraphic distribution. Why is this species not in Nanotax3 ?

Hi Vladimir

Polycladolithus stellaris was described by Stradner 1959 and reillustrated by Stradner et al 2010, it is generally regarded as a junior synonym of L. simplex. I am not sure if the combination Lithostromation stellaris has been formally proposed - Paul Bown wrote the relevant part of the paper on shallow marine nannos. I will ask him.
