Original Description

Blefuscuiana laculata (sensu stricto).
Diagnosis. Characterised by having a roughly quadrangular test outline, an open umbilicus, and intercameral sutures at the periphery of the test which form angles of about 120-135 degrees; the test surface lacks perforation cones.

Extra details from original publication
Remarks: B. laculata s.s. closely resembles P. sigali s.s. (see above) with which it occurs, the only significant difference being the number of chambers in the final whorl abutting the umbilicus (5 and 4 respectively; compare PI. 3, figs. 1- 2 with PI. 2, fig. 2). The oldest known occurrence of both taxa is Early Barremian. The refore, it seems likely that P. sigali s.s. gave rise to B. laculata s.s. shortly after the former taxon's first appearance; P. sigali s.s. itself ranges up to the Late Aptian.

. Central North Sea (wells); sub-seabed Atlantic, offshore Portugal (DSDP Site 398).

: Sigal (1979) believed that this form was confined to the Barremian stage (as characterised by ammonites) in DSDP Site 398 (200 km off the coast of Portugal). We record it from the Early Barremian of the Central North Sea.

Editors' Notes
The name Blefuscuiana laculata subsp. laculata Banner, Copestake, & White 1993 was not explicitly introduced by them but is the correct term under the ICZN for the sub-species which they described as Blefuscuiana laculata sensu stricto

I do not think Banner et al. intended to create a subsp. see p. 12-13

the ICZN is reasonably clear that in this type of case the name is automatically introduced, so i have addd a note to that effect.
