Original Description

Cephalis hemispherical with closely spaced pores or pits and bearing two stout 3-bladed or conical horns. Horns are equally well developed, the same length as or longer than the cephalis, and may be joined at the base (pl. 4, fig. 8); a third needle-like byspine extending from the vertical spine is frequently present also. Thorax conical or with a slight shoulder bearing subcircular, hexagonally framed pores, which increase in size distally and are usually arranged in longitudinal rows. Surface may be spiny. Three well-developed, 3-bladed feet, latticed proximally and tapering distally. Feet are divergent, convex outwards as long to half again as long as thorax.
Abdomen, when present, usually consists of one or two irregular rows of pores adjacent to thorax.

Size:
Somalian and Tropical forms (based on 25 specimens): Length of apical horn 25-33µm; of cephalis 19µm; of thorax 47-72µm; of terminal feet 62-80µm. Maximum breadth of cephalis 19µm; of thorax 67-86µm.
Peru Margin forms (based on 25 specimens). Length of apical forms 50-72µm; of cephalis 19µm; of thorax 97-134µm; of terminal feet 80-100µmm. Maximum breadth of cephalis 20µm; of thorax 105-115µm.

Etymology:
From the Latin auritus = having long ears

Distinguishing characters: This species differs from D. infabricatus by having a distinct thoracic termination. It is more robust than D. infabricatus and the apical horns are better developed and more equal in length. It is distinguished from all other species of Pterocanium by its paired horns.
Haeckel (1887, pl. 73, fig. 15) described a species, Pterocanium bicorne, which may be synonymous with our P auritum. However, the shape of the thorax in Haeckel's figured specimen is more biretta-shaped than any we have observed. On the other hand, we have not observed any other form with two equally developed apical horns. It would be necessary to examine topotypic material before adopting the name bicorne for the species here described. We are uncertain about Pterocorys diplotriaena Dogiel and Pterocorys bicornis Dogiel because their descriptions are based on 1 and 2 specimens, respectively.

Editors' Notes
In the Oman margin sediments the species is present in the D. petterssoni Zone, but because the occurrences are rare and sporadic, we are uncertain of its FAD. In the Peru material the oldest occurrences are in the S. peregrina Zone. The species is more abundant, more robust and more spinose in the Peru material. Johnson and Nigrini (1980) show a bimodal distribution for the species (Pterocanium sp.) in the Indian Ocean where it is present in all samples north of the equator and is rare in samples between 30°S and 46°S.
